5 Reasons to Shop Small on Nov. 26
Think about your favorite coffee shop, boutique or restaurant. Now imagine the Casper Area without all of our local businesses that make our city unique. Small Business Saturday, a day when holiday shoppers are encouraged to support local businesses, is scheduled for November 26, 2022.
Not sure what exactly the benefits of shopping small (on the 26th and everyday) are? Here are just a few:
Supporting Your Local Community
When you shop small, you’re supporting and growing your community. Businesses pay taxes, which are then invested back into the Casper community. According to a survey by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business, Small Business Saturday in 2021 reached an estimated $23.3 billion, an 18% increase from the $19.8 billion in 2020. Statistics from the National Federation of Independent Businesses show about 67 cents of every dollar spent in a locally owned business stays within the community, while only 40 cents of every dollar spent at a big box retailer remains local.
Impacting the Economy
According to the Wyoming Business Council, out of the 33,760 businesses in Wyoming, 90.8% of them employ fewer than 20 people and nearly 62% of companies employ fewer than 5 people. Therefore, 60% of businesses are in the retail or service industries and supporting small business in Casper and Wyoming has an even greater affect than elsewhere in the nation.
Getting Excellent Customer Service
Locally owned and operated businesses have the ability to provide more personable, hands-on, and memorable customer experiences. When you personally know the people behind the company you’re doing business with, you enjoy a connection you would not otherwise have.
One of a Kind Items
Searching for the perfect gift can sometimes be difficult. Small businesses are more likely to offer unique items not found in large department stores. The combined presence of our community’s many locally owned and operated businesses makes it different from any other city in the world. By supporting these businesses, we ensure the uniqueness is preserved within our community.
Entrepreneurship fuels economic innovation and prosperity. By starting a small business, the business owner is taking charge of his or her own future. Not only do independent businesses employ more people directly, they also are the customers of other local businesses, therefore expanding opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
