Water Treatment Facility Operator

Job Description

General Description:
Performs technical and semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant

Supervision Exercised/ Accountability:
Works under direct supervision of Water Treatment Plant Manager / Chief Operator

Major Tasks:
Monitor plant functions from a master control station or SCADA system which monitors and indicates all plant operational data. Keep records of all machinery, storage tanks, pumping facilities and regulatory requirements.
Receives training in the performance of a variety of tasks including the inspection and servicing of equipment and machinery; makes periodic rounds of the plant.
Takes water samples and receives training in conducting daily and weekly chemical tests of water samples to determine turbidity, chlorine residual, PH, and bacteriological content along with other laboratory procedures.
Maintains and services filters and filter subsystems on a regular basis.
Operates and maintains the chlorination system, body feed and precoat systems, and all pumping systems.
Overhauls pumps, valves, and related pneumatic operators and hydraulic equipment.

Minor Tasks:
Performs a variety of building and grounds tasks as well as janitorial duties.
Attends periodic workshops and training sessions to improve working knowledge of water treatment systems. Must meet Wyoming DEQ Chapter V guidelines for CEU credits for current certification.
Confers with supervisor, presenting and resolving difficult problems or questions. Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge Areas:
Knowledge of the methods and techniques of water plant operations and treatment techniques.
Knowledge of basic chemistry and mathematics with mechanical ability.

Skill / Ability Areas:
The ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to ensure compliance with and follow standard safety practices and procedures common to water plants. Skill in the operation of equipment utilized by the water plant. Ability to learn the operation of meter, pumps, electrical and electronic systems and related equipment of a water treatment plant. Ability to take accurate readings, keep records, and make reports. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Special Conditions of Work:
Hazardous work conditions due to the nature of work and chemicals used; involves emergency on-call status and some weekend work. Employee may be required to lift as much as fifty pounds on a regular basis and therefore good physical condition is required.

License Requirement:
Valid Wyoming Driver’s License Class C; Level 1 Water License, or the ability to acquire one within 6 months of employment, with eventual Level 2 Water Treatment License status after 1 year of experience.
